The purpose of the Permit to Work System (PTW) is to prevent injury, illness or death to personnel while conducting work of a high hazard or unusual nature The PTW system is one of the most comprehensive methods of safety assurance and should be reserved for situations where hazards are high and consequences severe or for situations where the work or precautions are complex or where the task is of an unusual, non-routine nature. For other tasks, a less formal method of safety assurance should be used.
