To specify minimum competencies required for those that respond to hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction incidents.

To produce firefighters who meet the requirements of NFPA 472.

- Understand the role and responsibilities of the First Responder to a chemical leak/spill, for the purposes of controlling and containing the leak/spill
- A general understanding of hazardous substances (Chemical, Radiation and Biological) and hazards posed to humans and the environment, including short and long-term effects
- Using the company’s emergency response plan, to effectively control and manage a hazmat scene and subsequent clean-up operations
- Regulations controlling the disposal of hazardous waste and the requirements of a waste disposal program
- First Aid treatment of a victim contaminated by hazardous substance
- Establish a safe HAZMAT environment and impalement incident prevention control measures
- Know the identifications and classifications of known materials, using signs, labels and the MSDS
- Understand the potential outcome of an incident, involving hazardous chemicals
- Recognize the limitations of the company’s abilities and resources, and when to call the Emergency Services for additional assistance
- The appropriate selection of personal protective equipment their use care maintenance and limitations including the requirement of a respiratory protection program
