Description

To specify minimum competencies required for those that respond to hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction incidents.

To produce firefighters who meet the requirements of NFPA 472.

  1. Understand the role and responsibilities of the First Responder to a chemical leak/spill, for the purposes of controlling and containing the leak/spill

 

  1. A general understanding of hazardous substances (Chemical, Radiation and Biological) and hazards posed to humans and the environment, including short and long-term effects

 

  1. Using the company’s emergency response plan, to effectively control and manage a hazmat scene and subsequent clean-up operations

 

  1. Regulations controlling the disposal of hazardous waste and the requirements of a waste disposal program

 

  1. First Aid treatment of a victim contaminated by hazardous substance

 

  1. Establish a safe HAZMAT environment and impalement incident prevention control measures

 

  1. Know the identifications and classifications of known materials, using signs, labels and the MSDS

 

  1. Understand the potential outcome of an incident, involving hazardous chemicals

 

  1. Recognize the limitations of the company’s abilities and resources, and when to call the Emergency Services for additional assistance

 

  1. The appropriate selection of personal protective equipment their use care maintenance and limitations including the requirement of a respiratory protection program
