This course is designed for those who have little or no experience with mobile crane operation. The course helps establish good operating practices for the participant while gaining seat-time and real-life operating experience to impart the necessary skills to give relatively inexperienced crane operators the knowledge and competence to operate a mobile crane.

Following successful completion of the course candidates will be able to

  • Rig and de-rig mobile crane,
  • Operate the crane to lift,
  • Transfer and position loads,
  • Carry loads in tandem lift and blind lift,
  • Personnel lift and carry out routine maintenance.

‘Operating Policy’ within the scope of the ‘Regulations’ is varied from Company to Company and that being accounted for the theoretical and practical aspects of this course. Classroom tutorial will cover, where appropriate the type of crane to be used by the delegate.
Theoretical

  • Legislation – LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA, codes of practice – BS7121
  • Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations
  • Crane types, capabilities and limitations
  • Crane terminology
  • Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  • Crane stability/ground conditions
  • Rated Capacity Indicator (RCI), Safe Working Loads (SWL) and load chart
  • Communications (Radio, verbal and hand signals, etc.)
  • Center of gravity, radius and rated strength,
  • Configuring cranes according to work specifications
  • Hoisting, slewing and derricking following the instruction of the slinger/signaller
  • Load rating information, Crane controls, Crane safety equipment / features
  • Wire Ropes Terminology, rigging, sheeving and accessories
  • Outriggers, Power-controlled lowering
  • Pre-use crane and equipment inspections
  • Electrical hazards
  • Load weight calculations
  • Wind Speed control
  • Jib / Boom Extension and Boom Length and Angle

Practical
After completion of Part 1 Classroom Theory phase of the course, all candidates are placed in a practical crane operating role. During this period the tutor observes the candidate, assessing his level of confidence, operating skills, general approach and aptitude. Tuition and advice will be given as required, where the following aspects will be covered for a range of operations are set which require the crane operator to carry out.

  • Pre-start procedures
  • Preparation of the Load and the immediate area around the crane.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the RCI and its Load/radius limits, Limited switches,
  • Outriggers, Working with a banksman
  • Emergency procedures for various simulated overload situations
  • Electrical Hazard awareness
  • Pick and Carry for various types of loads.
  • Maintenance and Inspection for the crane (Pre-use / Daily / Weekly / Monthly, etc.).

This course is suited for all personnel that under training as crane operator.

Normally five days training course, 2 days theoretical and 3 days practical tuition assessment.
However the recommended duration for non-operating candidates would be 5 months “hands-on” training under close supervision, meanwhile that duration of the course can be varied according to candidate’s operating skills.
