Every employee should be aware of how fires start, spread and are controlled. This course teaches general aspect for fire and makes employees aware of fire risks in the workplace.
The fundamental skills covered in Basic training ensures proper, safe execution of firefighting operations.

By the end of this course the participant will be able to:
- Properly donning a fire suit
- Properly donning and using a self-contained breathing apparatus
- Use portable fire extinguishers to put out class A, B, And C class fires (this exercise is
conducted 4 times: once for each class of fire) - Use all-purpose nozzles for protection and putting fires out
- Advancement of hose teams with the team leader giving commands
- Entering an internal space with S.C.B.A. and put out fire with fire hose
- Properly entering a watertight door with a fire behind door
- Taking immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency
- Performing an emergency drill following a station bill
- Identify what extinguishers to use on what class fire
- Properly ventilating a fire
- Correctly overhauling a fire
- Effectively containing a fire and using suppression system

Day 1 (Theoretical)
- Fire defense policy; safety signs/symbols on fire equipment.
- Fire prevention includes legal, financial and personal consequences.
- Procedures for employees: alerting the fire department and evacuation procedures.
- The theory of fire: methods of fire transmission, the chemistry of combustion, sources of
heat, phases of a fire; classification of fires and extinguishing methods. - Recognizing different types of fires (ordinary combustible materials, electrical, flammable
liquids and gases); risks from the environment (where the fire is, structure and layout of site,
adjacent hazards, structural materials) and appropriate firefighting procedure. - Firefighting and safety equipment – identifying, selecting and checking fire extinguishers,
hose reels, and buckets. - Use of Fire Fighting safety equipment including fire extinguishers, hose reels and buckets
and fire blankets. - Fighting containable/extinguishable fires; firefighting methods; changes in conditions; fire
monitoring issues. - Retreating from a fire site and handing over to appropriate personnel.
- Reporting/recording the status of fire and equipment
- Practical training to use equipment to its full potential.
Day 2 (Practical)
- Hazards (Safety for all)
- Sound alarm
- Identify the type of fire and extinguishing agent
- Ensure that extinguisher used is in a serviceable condition
- Pull (Break seal and pull pin)
- Aim (Base of fire)
- Squeeze (Controlled action)
- Sweep (Controlled action)
- Keep eye on exit while extinguishing the fire

This course is suited for everyone who at some point in time might run the risk of being in a fire.
