Course Purposes

This course discusses blast injury specific to the research about family needs during rehabilitation and recovery. We present a detailed approach for understanding family resilience and the long-term consequences of injuries on families.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course the participant will be able to:
 
  •  Summarize the polytrauma and TBI research about family needs during rehabilitation and recovery, describe current efforts to improve family-centered care, and detail approaches for understanding family resilience and the long-term consequences of injures on families.
  •   Using the framework of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) explain the challenges faced by Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans as they reintegrate into the community.
  •   Apply a multidimensional approach (such as the biopsychosocial model)to each symptom cluster so to delineate/manage the psychological, occupational, and social dysfunctions related to mild to moderate TBI.

Course Contents

  •   Families of patients with polytrauma: Understanding the evidence and charting a new research agenda
  •   Using International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to understand challenges in community reintegration of injured veterans
  •   Neuro-psychiatric diagnosis and management of chronic sequelae of war-related mild to moderate traumatic brain injury

Course Recipients

This course is suited for
 
  • pre-hospital care providers and first receivers as well as public health responders who may be called on to respond to a mass casualty incident and/or treat victims of an explosion
  • (e.g., EMA, EMS, firefighters, law enforcement, hospital-based physicians and nurses, social services, rural clinicians).
